July 2026 | Summer School in Yerevan, Armenia
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS & FORMER SOVIET AREA: Legacies and Decolonialization in Contemporary Culture and Politics
The Summer School gathered students from Swiss and Armenian universities. It offered a large set of activities allowing the participants to acquire knowledge on the political, social, cultural and economic life of Armenia, the broader region of South Caucasus, Russia and the former Soviet area, as well as the neighboring countries of Turkey and Iran.

Dynamics of Conflict and Peacebuilding in Eastern Europe: Interdisciplinary and Cross-Regional Perspectives
Building on the academic workshops organised between 2023 and 2025, the OES is once again hosting an international conference this year on the theme “Dynamics of Conflict and Peacebuilding in Eastern Europe: Interdisciplinary and Cross-Regional Perspectives”. It will take place from 24 to 26 June 2026 at the University of Bern.
The conference not only provided a forum for the presentation and discussion of ongoing research projects by established and early-career researchers in the field of conflict and peace studies for Eastern Europe, but was also a venue for exchange on the most significant contextual developments in various regions and their global implications, as well as on the key theoretical, conceptual and political debates surrounding the topics addressed by the conference.
In addition to the workshop panels (closed format), the conference also offered two public events at the University of Bern:
- 24 June 2026, 18:00 (Room F -121, Lerchenweg 36, 3012 Bern/ basement): “The Conflict in Chechnya. Radicalisation, Violence and War”, Keynote and discussion with Prof. Julie Wilhelmsen (NUPI Oslo)
- 25 June 2026, 18:00 (Schweizerische Osteuropabibliothek, Hallerstr. 6, 3012 Bern): “Societal Transformations in Ukraine, Russia and Georgia”, Roundtable with conference participants from Ukraine, Russia and Georgia

«Kriegsgefangenschaft und Internierung»
Cet atelier est une coopération entre le Centre de recherche sur les documents diplomatiques suisses, la Chaire d'histoire générale et d'Europe orientale de l'Université de Berne et l'Institut historique allemand de Moscou. Des millions de membres de l'Armée rouge ont été faits prisonniers de guerre par les Allemands pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Plusieurs milliers d'entre eux ont réussi à s'enfuir en Suisse. Ils ont joué un rôle central dans la reprise des relations diplomatiques entre la Suisse et l'Union soviétique. En Union soviétique, les (anciens) prisonniers de guerre ont été confrontés au reproche collectif de trahison. L'atelier discutera de la captivité de guerre, de la pratique suisse d'internement et des questions de rapatriement dans leur interdépendance. Les perspectives des prisonniers de guerre et des internés eux-mêmes ainsi que les différentes expériences de ce groupe hétérogène seront également prises en compte. Les personnes intéressées peuvent s'inscrire jusqu'au 10 mars 2023 via dodis@dodis.ch. Men & Masculinities under Socialism. A Social and Cultural History
This workshop aims to consider critical men’s studies and the history of masculinities, and to make these approaches fruitful for Eastern European gender studies and the gender history of socialism. Its objective is to stimulate new paths for writing the histories of masculinities under socialism, focusing especially on examining the meanings of masculinities in everyday life. Therefore, the workshop opens with a general discussion of the history of masculinities, including two keynote speeches of Jürgen Martschukat (The Politics of Masculinity and Whiteness in Recent American History) and Erica L. Fraser (Military Masculinity and Postwar Recovery in the Soviet Union), and a film screening and discussion (introduced by György Kalmár). The second part of the workshop presents different case studies on the history of masculinities under socialism and will be organized around the discussion of pre-circulated article drafts.

Au congrès international du programme des études "Éturde de l'Europe orientale Berne-Fribourg" des expert-e-s de l'Europe médiane, de l'Europe du Sud et de l'Europe orientale expliquent et réfléchissent aux tendances de l'image de soi politique et démocratique, aux questions de migration et à la confrontation avec sa propre histoire, trente ans après de l'année symbolique "1989".
