From Timber Rush to Environmental Crisis: The Political Forests of Romania, 1990-2020
Jeudi, 05/11/2020, 18h15 | The talk explores transformations of human-animal-forest relations over the last thirty years. It shows how unruly coalitions and politics shaped forest and animal histories in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains. In brief, the argument is that a timber boom triggered an environmental crisis narrative, and further cascaded into changes in forestry and mountain dwellers' livelihoods, reshaping forests from wood reservoirs into national treasures and homes for bears and precious reintroduced bison. The talk anchors the arguments in ethnographic research and uses insights from environmental history and political ecology.

More than geophysical factors, however, are motivating the drive to develop resources and infrastructure in the region. In this talk, Mia Bennett will explain how from Siberia to northern Canada, despite the importance of environmental factors, development remains politically and economically conditioned, locally negotiated, and cyclical rather than linear.
